First E
I guess I must have been close to 17 and was heading to the friend of a friend’s 18th Birthday party.
The event was being held at a small seat less theatre and the stage was to be the oversized DJ booth, Drum and Bass was still a burgeoning toddler in comparison to other main stream genres but it was the coolest flavour of the time and would pump aggressively from large, hired speakers throughout the evening.
Although I was eager to shove almost any chemical into my body for kicks there had recently been a media flourish concerning the death of a young English girl called Leah Betts, she had died after taking ecstasy and her story had been plastered across TV’s and Newspapers Worldwide. This meant I was probably slightly more cautious than I had been in the past and decided to start by breaking my first ecstasy tablet into quarters.
I took the first quarter as soon as I arrived at the venue and sat nonchalantly awaiting the buzz. Half an hour passed and nothing happened....I took another quarter.
After a very long, slightly nervous although bravado encrusted hour I threw the remaining half a tablet down my neck. Within 10 minutes I was on the stage jumping around next to the confused but entertained DJ.
I have no idea what I must have looked like at the time but in my mind I was sweating glitter, executing some extremely well coordinated dance moves and most of all exciting every lady present. In reality I was little more than a sweaty, over excited, lank haired teenager making a dickhead of myself on a large stage and annoying the hired help.
I fucking loved it.
This was to be the start of my ecstasy journey which in time you will see brought extreme emotions at both ends of the scale.

Important and heartfelt footnote:
My intention is not to make fun of the Leah Betts incident and although my musings concerning ecstasy are somewhat light hearted I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering endured by her friends and family following the sad event. It’s inclusion in my story stands only as proof that her memory remains and that although I was too stupid and naive to take heed of this awful incident I do fully understand the trauma drug abuse can create. I do not wish to glamorise drug abuse but instead share some whimsical tales about my own personal involvement, as I’ve said above, with the highs come the lows and you will hear these all in good time. RIP Leah Betts
